Weather Trained Housebuilders Predict Sunshine & No Showers At Front Garden

Following the flooding of the area in July, developers carving up the Front Garden area have assured us that the homes to be built there will not flood.

They've even spun that news by saying it wouldn't happen even in the worst floods in a thousand years.

So that means the houses in Wichelstowe will either be the best designed against flooding like the ones in the Netherlands, or that the developers are telling porkie pies.

Swindon Centric Says ; Does anyone in one of those insurances offices along Commercial Road want to give us a rough assessment of what it might cost to insure against flooding on one of these houses? Go on, quote us wet, or dry!

Top Ten Things Heard On Swindon's Buses Last Week ; 22

Click here for the original and still the best at this brilliant idea, here's our own version for Swindon's buses from last week.

10 . Can I have a cigarette?

9 . Bugger it.

8 . I take it no-one's found the body yet?

7 . They're not going to do those bus changes now, not that they were going to bother me.

6 . Doesn't look like they're here yet, I'll make a run for it before they turn up.

5 . I found a hair clip in my laundry basket, he can't tell me his sideburns have got that long, he's lying.

4 . No, it gets called a Renault McCann, but you told it wrong.

3 . If he does call an election, I won't be here to vote, worse luck.

2 . I believe him, but I'm not sure for how long.

And the top ten overheard phrase from Swindon's buses last week, according to our office's tealady is...

1 . Doesn't matter how many times I told her, she insisted you spell 'hot' with an 'a', since she's a PA I shudder to think what the letters she sends out are like.

Overheard something we missed? Been told about a conversation that was far more juicy? If so, let us know.

Fresh Air Theft Makes Front Page ; Real News Shoved To Page 50

For the sake of an attention grabbing headline the Swindon Beaver Herald has placed it's real news on the backburner this Friday.

It led with a story about how a gang have been seen in Regent Circus at midnight every night for the past week collecting Swindon fresh air in decorative 250 gram boxes.

"We have reason to believe that these individuals are selling this Swindon fresh air on the black market. The latest craze to follow on from bottled water is container based fresh air."

That comment from Officer Martin Pete of the Wiltshire Constabulary.

There were various puns about police getting their breath and the sweet smell of air, but we won't repeat them here.

Swindon Centric Says ; The real stories buried in the centre of the paper included the eruption of the Swindon volcano called Bertha, but you'll know all about that by now.

Swindon's Most Wooden ; Wanted Dead Not Alive

The repaving of Wharf Green is still happening, with the trees that were chopped down not to be wasted.

The council has told us they are to use the lumber to produce an art installation.

Indeed, council leader Roderick Bluh said "these artists have come up with a really imaginative way to use the wood".

Swindon Centric Says ; We're sure nature had a far more original use for the wood, in trees, which everyone liked, before they were cut down.

Panic Over ; Demons & Bad Journalism Not A Threat To Town

We at the Swindon Centric Blog pride ourselves on the level of our journalistic standards and therefore feel stupid and cheap when we fail to live up to those levels.

Yesterday's headline 'Demons Invade Haydon Wick, Exterminators Called In' should have included a different word to 'demons', that word being 'midges'.

We'd like to say sorry for any readers who thought this was a piece of accurate reporting and to those who were caught in the stampede to their church, St Johns and any brusing that occurred.

Swindon Centric Says ; Could have been worse, I mean at least we didn't type volcanoes by mistake or anything as silly as that.

Wheelie Wheelie Against The Bins

The residents of Broadgreen have launched a petition against the introduction of wheelie bins in their area.

Despite assurances, one resident visited by a Waste Warden does not want a bin, as with other locals, she says there just is not enough space for them.

The resident in question was asked whether she would consider sharing a bin with a neighbour, which seems sensible and an effective solution to some people having little space. Her response ; "No way".

Swindon Centric Says ; You can't really blame the council for missing some streets collections of recycling, wheelies and green sacks when residents have negative attitudes to any sort of change. Its recycling karma Swindon.

Top Ten Things Heard On Swindon's Buses Last Week ; 21

Click here for the original and still the best at this brilliant idea, here's our own version for Swindon's buses from last week.

10 . I thing we're holding, yes, we're holding.

9 . She looks like a milkmaid in that dress.

8 . For a man of his years I'd agree with you.

7 . Come round and give it a pull.

6 . He started talking over me, but I don't know what he was saying, I wasn't listening.

5 . They have a big variety, I was really surprised.

4 . He said he had a great time, otherwise he'd just have been sat in eating chocolate digestives and watching CSI.

3 . Last time I saw him he had far less hair.

2 . This definitely rings a bell.

And the top ten phrase overheard on Swindon's buses last week is...

1 . Have you heard the joke about the McCanns and Renault's new car? I really can't repeat it here.

Have you overheard something we missed last week? If so, let us know.

Council's 200 Jobs To Be 'Reassigned', Not Lost

Swindon Borough Council is to cut 200 jobs from it's workforce because it's become so efficent.

That's one of the reasons. Our council has become so efficent, it is run so smoothly and meets all it's targets, it has to shed people because they are just wasteful to employ.

And the other reason?

As a part of any well run organisation, they said they have a responsibility to "challenge costs".

Swindon Centric Says ; So when those 200 get their P45s, they can say they were not made redundant, they have had their employment 'reassigned', because, not of cost cutting, but of a 'cost challenge'.

Isn't the age of spin, post-Blair meant to be over? Seems it hasn't reached the Civic Offices yet.

Towering Inferno ; Burnt Victoria Sponge Causes Panic In Town

In a quiet news day and call-out day for our emergency services, a jam and cream victoria sponge caused much drama earlier today.

Mrs Peggy Trellis of Northwick Park Avenue, Victoria Road had just put in a cinnamon flavoured sponge cake to bake at 11.30am, but got distracted by some slugs on her pumpkins in her back garden.

" I'd been busy all morning and just thought I'd take a break in the garden for twenty minutes while the cake rose in the oven. I started clearing some slugs from round our vegetables and got so engrossed I lost track of time. The next thing I knew I heard a helicopter, blue flashing lights went passed and there was a cloud of smoke coming out of the oven.

A cloud of toxic-sweet smelling cinnamon from the burnt cake drifted over Old Town casting a shadow all over the Kingshill Road area. At one point nosey parkers reported the cloud was visible from the International Space Station, on Google Earth satellites and Wootton Bassett.

" We get called to this type if incident once a year on average, so taking no chances we rolled out all our equipment." Chief fire officer, Sam Samuels.

Fireman Sam reported they had not overreated by sending seven appliances, one with a big ladder on the roof, three sets of cutting gear and two inflatable rescue boats.

He added all equipment was used, though he admitted the two rescue boats struggled for space next to Japanese Koi in Mrs Trellis' ornamental pond.

Swindon Centric Says ; Thinking of making fairy cakes with the kids on the weekend? Don't take the risk.

PS - The cutting equipment was used to divide up the unburnt cake, which was shared round to tired firemen and neighbours. After tea was served the street was shut, a piano was brought out and a rendition of 'Roll Out The Barrel' kicked off a street party which is expected to go on late into the night.

Swindon Clicks ; Custard Costs Top Letter Writers Worry Woes

The results of our latest user interactive interface are in and have been counted via the office casio calculator.

By a majority of 60%, voters want the next important subject of the local Swindon Beaver Herald's letters page to be the alarming rising cost of custard.

Other options on the vote were discussion of the town's nuclear defence shield and the major fault line, which scored 20% of the vote each.

Swindon Centric Says ; We'll have a week long 'cut the cost of custard' campaign launching tomorrow, unless some more exciting news breaks before we can publish it, such as a nuclear strike, or the big earthquake central Swindon is predicted to suffer before the end of the year.

Town Centre Teaching ; UWE Heads For North Star

After just a short period of quiet, the University Of The West Of England has signed an agreement with the Council to draw up detailed plans for a campus at North Star.

The site will cater for up to 3000 students, with strong ties to local, Swindon based businesses.

Swindon Centric Says ; Some have said this campus wouldn't be 'big university' sized, compared to other places. Perhaps Swindon could set a new trend, with a half a dozen universities with small campuses in the town?

Swindon ; Striving to be different?

Top Ten Things Heard On Swindon's Buses Last Week ; 21

Click here for the original and still the best at this brilliant idea, here's our own version for Swindon's buses from last week.

10 . If our recycling box isn't collected soon, the newspapers inside them will be historic.

9 . You can't beat a bit of cheddar.

8 . Oops a-daisy!

7 . If I sit on the sunny side, I'll end up looking like Judith Charmers.

6 . You never see any birds in our garden, except a couple of blue tits, when it's cold.

5 . You can't win if you don't buy a ticket.

4 . I was reading that premium bonds are the biggest con going.

3 . He's crashed another car, can we say he's cursed?

2 . It's one-fifty for a single now, daylight robbery with a person wearing a namebadge.

And the top ten overheard phrase on Swindon's buses last week, as voted for by hundreds of the Swindon Centric office staff is...

1 . Just because the bank's given me two credit cards doesn't mean they are any more responsible than me.

Think that these are rather tame? Think that you can do better? Let us know.

Council Gets Forgetful ; Could Be Sign Of Early Onset Stupidness

A bus stop in Toothill has been half-finished for two months after it seems being dug up by a group of workman, then forgotten about.

The Council responded by saying they had no record of work on the site but that they would send someone to look at it.

Swindon Centric Says ; Whoever is responsible for it being left, surely anyone from the Council has driven, walked or rode past it in the last two months and noticed an unsafe footpath, which any responsible employee would report, especially if it's left with no progress or sign of works?

Town Man Worried About ID Theft Has Name & Picture Printed In Paper

A man who's worried about identity theft from a financial firm he had dealings with has made sure no-one finds out more about him than is needed.

He's had his name, picture and name of the company published in the local newspaper.

Swindon Centric Says ; But, since we all know how bad their spelling is, they've probably got his name wrong, so he might be alright!

Swindon Olympics 2012 - Back The Bid

Lord Seb Coe visited Swindon today to try and make the rest of the UK feel less left out of the mostly London 2012 Olympic Games.

He said people didn't realise quite how close Swindon is to London. Clearly, Brunel must have known, when placing the works here, just how far it was from London.

Councillors lapped up the visit of a celeb to the town, just the sort of thing that makes them for a change feel like they're involved in national politics and events.

Swindon Centric Says ; Unless the East side of Swindon is marked out with white paint as the far end of the long-jump sandpit, the link Swindon will have to the 2012 games will be the people travelling to see it in the capital. Get ready Great Western, book your seat now Olympic rail-goers!

Ugly Baby Competition Launched ; Town Full Of Ugly Tots

In a counter to a rival publication's launch of their 'Baby Of The Year' competition, the Swindon Beaver Herald has opened voting for the Swindon Ugly Baby Competition 2007.

" We felt too much time is being given over to good looking, beautiful people, especially bonny babies, so after a glass or three at our local we hit upon a smashing idea, an ugly baby competition." That comment from the editor of the Swindon Beaver Herald, Perry White, who shall be going home slightly worse for wear by taxi.

Voting opened at 11am this morning and the receptionist, Jan at the SBH HQ was quickly overwhelmed, with the phone and computer system logging 756,000 calls and votes via their website before it crashed at 2.32pm.

Cub Reporter Jimmy Olsen commented on the demand to vote by saying "clearly there's a lot of ugly looking babies in Swindon".

One member of medical staff in the maternity area of healthcare within Swindon was reported as saying "we have to tell new parents how lovely their new baby is day-in-day-out, but really, some of them look like they've been sniffing lemons for nine months."

Swindon Centric Says ; How ugly and vile is your baby? Vote Now!

Bread Shortages As Hoarding Pensioners Stock Up On Big Baps

We're getting details of a developing story tonight concerning several important ingredients; big baps, yeast and old people.

Shortages of bread began to be reported from 10.30 onwards this morning. Gradually, everywhere had been eaten out by early afternoon, there was a slight lull while those panic buying went home to watch Diagnosis Murder. Eventually the last place left, Sainsbury's Bridgemead, with stocks of organic wholemeal tins ran dry at 3.19pm.

" They swept through, like a tornado, a tornado that picks up bread and queues, pays for it, then dashes for the bus home. This store had 1.3 tonnes of bread products this morning and now we've been cleared out, by pensioners". That quote from Marcus Skelton, store manager at Tesco's at Ocotal Way.

Pensioners throughout the town are thought to have been the only ones to have read the middle business sections of their weekend papers, so reading the stories about bread price rises, thus prompting this morning and afternoon's well organised and polite townwide, yeast based, madness.

Tell The Truthiness ; There really is only one comment to make on a story such as this ; crumbs!

PS - There was one late dash at 4.35 this afternoon when a rumour spread that a lorry load of milk-loaf had been delivered to the Old Town Co-Op. One 23 year old shelfstacker had to be taken to the Great Western Hospital after being buried under 47 packets of fruit scones in the melee. He is being treated for high levels of baked goods in his system. A spokesman said his condition remains soft, delicious and fruity.

Top Ten Things Heard On Swindon's Buses Last Week ; 20

Click here for the original and still the best at this brilliant idea, here's our own version for Swindon's buses from last week.

10. I'd rather stay in one place than go from pub to pub.

9. There's rugby on this weekend, I have no idea really.

8. They say it'll be an indian summer, foreigners get everything nowhere days.

7. The Mum didn't appear very upset on TV, makes you wonder.

6. Do you like my shoes, they're not old, I've just never worn them.

5. He has the stiches out Thursday, I'm thinking on slipping the doctor a tenner to keep them in for another week, I've got use to the peace and quiet.

4. Here's to a worse series of Big Brother next year, with stranger people than ever, it could be us.

3. They keep shutting the road to do work, they need the space to sit in their van and eat lunch.

2. You cannot quote me on that.

And now is the number one phrase overheard on Swindon's buses from last week...

1. So Dyson might build his design school in Swindon, well that would not suck, since they're bagless I mean.

What's The Work At Wharf Green?

With work due to start this week on the first area to be redeveloped in the much hyped New Swindon Company managed regeneration, we'd like to ask something.

Exactly what is going to be different at Wharf Green than what went before?

You'll recall there use to be a vast green area, poorly maintained that was taken up, mature trees and all and tarmaced over. Since the original plan of a climbing wall on the Brunel carpark was dropped the only real change is the big screen TV to be hung from the car park, facing down Canal Walk. In the picture above there is what looks like windmills on top of the carpark, not talked about before anywhere that we can remember.

Swindon Centric Says ; There'll be some additional flower and shrub beds, new flooring, but it's not really much? We're not trying to put a negative spin on this, it's good that work is to begin, but surely flooring and greenery are 'finishing off' that should happen once big construction work has finished?

PS The New Swindon Company website is vague about details for Wharf Green, do you know more? Let us know.

Parents March Kids To Police Station, This Is Not A Made Up Headline

Two teenagers spotted by CCTV repeatedly defacing a wall in Rodbourne with graffiti have been marched down to Gablecross Police Station, by their parents.

As utterly satisfying as this headline and story is, it doesn't happen very often, so allow Swindon Centric to wallow in it.

Swindon Centric Says ; Aaah, justice is sweet, especially when it's done in such an embarassing manner involving your parents. If we can just work on getting the head of the Wiltshire Constabulary to be the character Rowan Atkinson plays in The Thin Blue Line...

Town's Letter-Writers Shocked At Change In Unoffical Rules

The regular writers to the letters page of the Swindon Beaver Herald have been shocked (shocked to the same degree a character in Midsomer Murders would be if they admitted on the village green that the cake they baked for the cricket match was bought from Somerfields) at the publication of a letter breaking their 'unwritten rules'.

Mr James Anderson, of Mountford Crescent, Nythe, wrote a letter about the phasing of traffic lights at the junction of Farnsby Street and Farringdon Road, breaking some ancient rules which all those submitting to the page adhere to.

" Everyone knows the subjects of the letters have to be limited to moaning about recycling collection/council tax/young people with or without hoods/graffiti/illegal immigrants/legal immigrants/out of work mothers/out of work immigrants/out of work mothers who are immigrants/out of work former council recycling collectors who are polish single mums and have entered the country illegally." That comment from Des McArthur, of Clement Atlee Street, Okus. We have edited Mr McArthur's comments due to legal issues, space and bandwith contraints.

" How was I to know what the rules are? Since this is a letters page for people who love to write it's ironic that the rules are unwritten." That comment from a smart-alec Mr Anderson this evening.

Swindon Centric Says ; We hear Mr Anderson has sent another letter talking about the price of Cornish pasties throughout Swindon. How will the town's literary scene cope?

Parking Ticket Causes Questions In Parliament, Odd Word Over Garden Fences

Roadworks in Old Town have made parking worse for residents, with some just losing their cool.

Having been misinformed, Keith Angell parked in a one-hour space, overnight, he was then surprised when he went out to work at 6.30am the next morning to have had a ticket placed on his windshield.

He claims the wardens laid in wait for him and it was an ambush.

Swindon Centric Says : They didn't really 'lie in wait' if he parked his car overnight and they were there in the morning at 6.30am giving him a ticket, did they? Or he could just buy a weekly bus ticket and solve his transport problems.

PS - It must have been a very quiet for the wardens as no-one else was reported to have received a ticket on that same day three weeks ago, since Mr Angell is the only one in the local media. If you know of any please email us and we'll have a new daily fifty page section where people can report their stories of cutting themselves shaving, tripping up and eating tomato when you have an allergy to it (causing a good laugh to friends with you at the time).

Top Ten Things Heard On Swindon's Buses Last Week ; 19

Click here for the original and still the best at this brilliant idea, here's our own version for Swindon's buses from last week.

10. That wasn't a Scottish accent, sounded more Italian than anything, especially when you said ciabatta.

9. They all go back to school next week, I can't wait, lets jump in the Tardis and make it happen right now.

8. He called me darling, do I look like a married woman?

7. She's up to something, she was asking about hotel rooms, must be seeing someone else.

6. I wonder if we'll get overheard and put on that website?

5. All he cares about now is his mortgage payment and who's parked in his two allocated spaces.

4. I bought three new pairs of pants, no I didn't try them and no, do not start at me.

3. There he is, owes me fifteen quid, I should go after him.

2. No, I had a bag of wotsits and a tango for breakfast, yes I know, I have perfect taste.

And the one highest rated phrase overheard on Swindon's buses from last week is...

1. She went all the way to Asda in her slippers, I've done that but don't tell anyone.

Think you can do better? Overheard something juicy or with potential to be a right scandal? Let us know.

Double-Standards For Drink-Driving School Governor's Board

The chairman of the governors at Ridgeway School has been banned from driving for 16 months after being caught drink driving.

What's curious however is that despite doing the decent thing and offering his resignation, the board of governors refused to accept it.

As a member of the board says " this doesn't affect his ability to be chairman ".

Swindon Centric Says ; Perhaps it doesn't affect his duties in the day-today running of the board, but it does affect his ability to set an example to impressionable children at a big secondary school and for that reason the board should have accepted his resignation straight away. What are tbey up to?

Double-Decker Scare Politics In The Classroom

The threat of funding being withdrawn or reduced for transporting secondary school pupils to Bradon Forest and Ridgeway has once again sprang up.

This story seems to rear it's head every few years and each time sinks without trace.

Swindon Centric Says ; Council threatens to reduce funding, says how much money is spent each year, says what it could be spent on, then finds it can afford it, by slightly reducing the service, residents breath a sigh of relief and are thankful to their elected representatives.

Sound familiar?

Wasn't this a tactic employed a while back, when there was discussion about the arts funding budget for Swindon?

You want to reduce the budget for something, so you threaten to withdraw all funding, then 'save' it, by a few months later, still cutting the budget as you originally wanted to, but the public thinks you've made huge efforts to address their concerns and save the service from vanishing all together.

Besides, if students all went to Greendown, wouldn't some of those on the fringes of West Swindon still need transport? How would Wiltshire County Council feel about the hugely underused sites at Ridgeway and Bradon Forest?

Top Ten Things Heard On Swindon's Buses Last Week ; 18

Click here for the original and still the best at this brilliant idea, here's our own version for Swindon's buses from last week.

10 . You haven't got the range my dear.

9 . You need years of intense training, plus several thousand pounds, I'm halfway there.

8 . Really wanna see High School Musical 2, lets go today, lets go mad.

7 . That's nasty, very personal and impossible to deny.

6 . What's that rattling?

5 . They've been hearing a weird noise over at South Marston, 5 to 1 it's the Children Of The Corn.

4 . No doubt in my mind, she's a tart.

3 . I nearly fell asleep, he was that exciting.

2 . Nobody ever wins on premium bonds, it's like phoning into Richard & Judy, you regret it a few minutes later and someone else has got your money.

And the top ten phrase overheard on Swindon's Buses and voted for by the women of the Gorse Hill Cake Baking & Recreational Part Time Nuclear Decomissioning Club (donations of money, cruise missiles and baking soda always welcome) is...

1 . It wasn't until I heard the garage door make a louder crashing sound than normal when I realised his head had got in the way, he didn't make a sound though.

Flats On The Hill ; Locals Throw Up Several Floors Of Opposition

With the results of our latest-ish user interactive interface, Swindon Centric can give the council and developers thousands of pounds worth of free polling.

66% of those polled said Old Town needs more flats like a hole in the head.

33% said the top of town does need more flats. We can't help think those people are those who want to make a fast buck by buying property up and leasing it to line their pockets.

Curiously, nobody answered 'no'.

Swindon Centric Says ; More scientific than a doppler radar, cheaper than a cornish pastie ; the Swindon Centric User Interface!

Golfers Tee-ed Off For Doing The Right Thing

A man who stole more than £6,000 from a golf society has been forgiven by his fellow members.

And in a suitable Swindon Reality twist to the story, the men who told the police about him have been blacklegged by the society. He got into financial difficulties and took the money to cover himself.

Love and understanding does seem selective in this story, as most members of the society have forgiven the man in question, however they cannot understand the opinion of those members who oppose the kindness shown to him, since he stole from them.

One quote sums up the bizzare details of all this in one, from Mr Humphries, speaking about the man under police investigation, " This has affected his life in a big way. His social life isn't what it used to be."

Swindon Centric Says ; We don't think our social life would be what it used to be if we didn't have £6,000 in our back pocket.

Phew What A Scorcher! Good Looking A-Level Teens In Short Supply, Urgent Call!

The Swindon Centric Blog is appealing on behalf of the Swindon Beaver Herald for any young people between the ages of 16-21 for current photography work.

Today and tomorrow's newspapers countrywide are full of photographs of A-Level students holding exam result notification. All those girls and boys featured are picked to be good looking, with tanned skin, small t-shirts, figure-hugging or cut off jeans and crop tops.

Unfortunately, since all sub-editors require candidates that look like extras from High School Musical, there is a nationwide shortage of fresh-faced, Disney Channel suitable subjects.

So if anyone out there thinks they could grace tomorrow's front pages, please contact the Swindon Beaver Herald on 01793 123456, let it ring twice then ask for Jimmy Olsen on the picture desk. Alternatively just dial 100 and you'll be instantly connected to the Daily Mail Good Looking Teenagers To Put On The Front Page To Sell More Papers Department.

Swindon Centric Says ; Or has natural selection weeded out all the ugly students?

Shoppers Urged To Be Aware Parking Ticket Prices Do Not Include Singing License

Only in Swindon.

A man who was yodelling was asked to leave the Brunel Centre as he was scaring shoppers. If you don't believe us, here's the story.

The gentleman in question is astonished that paying £7.50 to park his car doesn't allow him the right to sing.

We won't go through all the lurid details of this 'story', suffice to just sum up what we learned from it.

1 - Singing in a toilet could lead to worse things.

2 - In future we should demand that shopping centres provide car parking that includes the cost of singing on their property.

3 - Yodelling may help to reduce the risk of high blood pressure, as yodelling is rich in antioxidants.

4 - The Brunel Centre's security staff will assist those shoppers who find singing frightening.

Swindon Centric Says ; If this story wasn't real, we would have to have made it up.

Building At Coate - That's Soo Last Year?

Another week, another amount of policy fuzziness on the building at Coate plan.

First we were told that nothing would get built unless a university was to go with it.

Then we were assured the Council were in discussion with several universities.

Following the University Of Bath dropping out, a plea was given for any other universities which were interested to make themselves know.

The next twist was the comments made by the Great Western Hospital, which made clear it would not support development since the developers had not set aside enough land needed. They had suggested the GWH use land planned for an extended park-and-ride instead.

Not exactly an appropriate suggestion for an area meant to be a shining example of sustainability is it?

Then, the University Of The West Of England is believed to be in talks with the Council to build a campus at North Star. Bringing us full circle to the discussions several years ago of a town centre university.

Swindon Centric Says ; Just build it at North Star, if it's a failure at least we can still go back to Coate, the land will still be there. Won't it?

Waiter, There's A Zero Star Rating In My Soup

The council have released another fresh (not for all of them, bit smelly and e coli-looking some of them) batch of food hygiene ratings.

Those places in the Borough that got the lowest ratings include, Co-op in Old Town, Swindon Bazaar cash and carry in Lagos Street, Park Fish Shop in Cavendish Square, La Dolce Vita Restaurant Clarence Street, Oldham's takeaway in Rodbourne Road and Dixy Fried Chicken on Victoria Road, Terry Catering van on the Hawkesworth industrial estate, Gorse Hill Working Men's Club, the Patriot Arms pub in Chiseldon and the Sun Inn in Marlborough Road. Fourteen food premises were awarded the highest five star rating.

Swindon Centric Says ; No-one can fail to be interested in where got the low ratings, but it's highly informative to find that La Dolce Vita is bracketed in the zero rating league. We were always under the impression it was one of the better places, considering their prices and usually being full.

The moral of the story? Just because you've got decorative lions at your front door does not mean the glasses are clean.

My Locarno Is Now A Trendy Wine Bar

After years of standing weedy and slightly charred (twice), the old Locarno building in Old Town is to be rebuilt as, mostly, luxury flats.

There is provision for a gym and bar plus restaurant in the plans, which have yet to be confirmed as the owner has to apply for a license. Of course we all know how new applications for alcohol licenses are felt about by residents in Swindon.

Swindon Centric Says ; On the one hand it's good this plan has been signed, ok it's not yet built, but it's another step forward. But there is a real worry among Swindonians that Old Town will have thousands of flats and no facilities. Could the situation that reared itself on the new estates built around the town come back to haunt the modern day council? That was when estate after estate of new houses were built with no schools, shops, playgrounds, GPs etc to accompany them. Several areas of Swindon continue to suffer the ill effects of poor infrastructure provision to this day.

Will this poor planning situation be repeated and magnified in Old Town because of the high density of residences?

Swindon - Wide Empty Spaces

The behind the scenes of the town centre redevelopment has moved on a step with the selling of Davis House, just off Corporation Street.

However, the New Swindon Company admits that building work of any sort won't start until March, but will probably be delayed until after next summer. Davis House is part of The Exchange redevelopment scheme which includes the former Thamesdown Transport depot and bus station.

Swindon Centric Says ; When are any of the spaces in the town centre going to be built on and wouldn't it be better to keep buildings that are due for redevelopment in use until the construction is to start?

Web Voting Unreality From Swindon's Returning Officer

Swindon's Deputy Returning Officer Alan Winchcombe seems to live in a parallel universe, a bit like in Back To The Future Part 2.

He's been defending the e-voting that took place in Swindon for the local elections in May. Despite one of the town's MP's saying she found the system 'unacceptable', despite the Electoral Commission saying further trials had 'little merit', Mr Winchcombe seems to think the system's fine.

He said the system didn't work in some places but did work in Swindon.

How did it work? Did it work by taking into the early hours of the following morning for the e-votes to be counted, longer than their paper ballot equivalent? Did it work by the equipment being set up in a rush of a few weeks, when it should have taken months of preparation? Did it work by some people thinking they had only the option of voting electronically? Did it work by having inadequete booths, were it could be witnessed several feet away who those on PCs were voting for?

Swindon Centric Says ; But don't expect these questions to be answered by Alan Winchcombe, he's stuck in an alternative 1985, where Swindon 'Hill Valley' is controlled by Biff Tannen and the town hall is a casino hotel.

Police Appeal For Return Of Newspaper Headlines

An appeal was launched by Wiltshire Constabulary for the safe return of dozens of local news headlines that seem to have gone missing over previous months and weeks.

" The editor of the Swindon Beaver Herald has told us they've done their best, but the best headlines they can muster in today's edition include 'missing batteries ; are they yours?'. They cite those headlines missing include 'murderer charged', 'huge fraud at town firm' and 'superman ; where are you?'." That comment from PC Dibble, at a press conference held at Gablecross Police Headquarters this morning.

Needless to say, the Swindon Beaver Herald's late editions failed to report this news conference, due to it going missing from a sub-editor's desk. Their front page headline was 'Compost Bin Stolen'.

Swindon Centric Says ; If you call yourself a newspaper and fail to include a lot of news, aren't you breaking some rules?

Swindon Should Stop Being Ambitious ; Someone Reckons Its Too Much Like Hard Work

Some of those with an interest in the rebuilding work in Swindon Town Centre have said we shouldn't bite of more than we can chew by spending too much time talking about putting the canal back through our centre.

Instead, we should be concentrating on putting plenty of office space in the town centre and prevent anything impeding on that.

Swindon Centric Says ; The Fleming Way Post Office, the former Police Station, The Bus Depot site, how long have these been clear for? Maybe if there had been a rolling programme of building work, the worry about being over ambitious wouldn't figure.

- The River Cole has burst its banks, flooding Merlin Way and Covingham Drive.

- Staff car parks at Honda have been flooded, up to four feet.

Town Man's Obsession Makes Pointless Headlines

A 46 year old man from Swindon has made the headlines in the Swindon Beaver Herald after putting a piano in his front garden and dressing like his idol while travelling to and from work.

Tom Dwight, of Rocket Man Avenue, Freshbrook, has been given a double page spread by the local rag after taking his admiration for performer Elton John to the next level.

He began several weeks ago playing a grand pinao, which is in his front garden on Saturday mornings, giving lunchtime concerts every weekend. He followed this up by starting to journey to work dressed as his idol in platform boots and glitter covered trousers and jacket.

Swindon Centric Says ; We hear Stagecoach are evaluating their Heath & Safety policy, as Mr Dwight's replica glasses are too wide for the automatic doors. Watch out for a claim, it's only a matter of time before someone gets whacked by them.

Swindon Town Bought By Halliburton ; Cheney To Build Ranch

In a move to surely shock and horrify Swindon Town fans, the new owners have been revealed.

The American Halliburton Group bought a 95% stake in STFC this morning at 11am.

There are rumours that the County Ground is to be converted into an oil refinery and Iraq US coalition troop supply depot with a planning application being submitted to Swindon Borough Council tomorrow lunchtime.

Swindon Centric Says ; We don't expect Halliburton to put in a bid with central government to buy a stake in the Borough Council until August at the earliest.

Zucchi Leaves Reality Show ; Swindon Economy Returns To Normal

Following a frenzy of stupidity over the past three days, Thaila Zucchi has left the Big Brother house.

Those in the Swindon Centric office who watch the programme have said she left because she completed her task. But we have evidence the reason was slightly different.

Swindon Centric's source in the office of one of the movers and shakers in the town can confirm that someone from the business community leaned on someone at Endemol to end Zucchi's involvement as it's having a heavy impact on the town's economy.

Unconfirmed numbers claim the town's economic activity fell by 27%, while the average borough-wide IQ level fell below that of Paris Hilton.

Swindon Centric Says ; Watch something decent!

Swindon Scum To Be Cleaned, Except That Family That The Police Are Too Scared Of

A new police chief in town today promised to clean up Swindon's long-term crime. Chief O'Hara, formerly experienced in dealing with hardened criminals and downright nasty villians.

'' Its clear to me that my arrival marks a new chapter in Swindon's law-enforcement, if that's not big headed a thing to say. This town needs cleaning up and I reckon I'm the best man to do it.'' That quote from Chief O'Hara today as he spoke at an introductory press conference at the Gablecross police HQ.

Rumours have been flying round town this evening that when questioned off camera whether it included dealing with the Pimineto family of Gloucester Road, Westlea, who are believed to be responsible for four out of every ten crimes in the town, O'Hara is thought to have blown air out through his teeth and commented that he still wanted to have full free use of his kneecaps.

That'd be a no then.

Swindon Centric Says ; Perhaps we'll ring Batman, O'Hara tends to operate better when him and the Boy Wonder is around.

Holy Hot-Dog Batman!

Attention Grabbing Headline Less Than Perfectly True

Swindon's small, yet most imperfectly formed media outlets were rocked by scandal yesterday after a headline appeared with no basis in fact whatsoever.

The heavy rain experienced in the last week through the town and most of the country gave eager local newspaper editors plenty of fodder to fill otherwise blank pages in midweek editions, one slipped up.

The Swindon Beaver Herald's Lunchtime Edition yesterday ran with 'Worst summer rain in 125 Years Of Living Memory' on it's frontpage. It took 45 minutes after the first copies had hit the news stands before Cub Reporter Jimmy Olsen, manning the switchboard, was flooded with calls (seven at once, or mostly within quick succession) saying no-one in Swindon had lived 125 years.

To the newspaper's credit (we don't give it much, not after it's legally been found guilty of mis-using the name 'newspaper', but we won't take them to court, everyone knows it's not a real paper) the Late Edition Final, sent out at 5pm, printed a small explanation headline, under the main, attention grabbing one, explaining that the 125 was simply used to emphasis the severity of the rain.

Swindon Centric Says ; The rain's been heavy, but it didn't flood, how bad can it be?

Rumours by a sub-editor of the SBH that a man lives in Ferndale Road who's reached the age of 127 by eating nothing but Brazil nuts and drinking weak Earl Grey tea with lemon have been discounted. He is believed to have been asleep through any major storms involving headline grabbing rainfall levels while in his toddler stage.

Wyvern Theatre Blackhole Not Explained, Council Grin Hopefully

A date has been set for the reopening of the Wyvern Theatre, which has been shut since last autumn, of September this year.

The reason for the extended shutdown has been laid at the asbestos which was discovered in the roof, it was then discovered that more was in the building than they thought, meaning the reopening date was pushed even further back.

As has been said on other blogs, removal of asbestos isn't difficult, but can be dangerous, but removal of the insulation material is a big business.

Plus, how did the council not know where and how much asbestos was inside a civic building? Isn't it a legal requirement now to know this and if it can't be removed but is left in situ, that's it's sealed away from being a risk to users?

Swindon Centric Says ; For the Borough Council of a town which has had a cluster of asbestos related illnesses from the railway works, it seems bizzare at best and irresponsible at worst.

Council Spins A Crunchy Crisps Non Story

In a move that shows, despite the standing down of Tony Blair, that at a national level spin in government announcements may be taking a backseat, at a local level, Swindon Council are leading the way at dominating the headlines by controlling the local media.

Taking up several pages in today's Swindon Beaver Herald, the number of crisps sold at Council operated cafes has been talked up by special media advisors to the point that anyone would imagine it was like the top ten rich people or back pre-internet downloads when people got excited about the Sunday top forty chart countdown.

For the record, Swindon's favourite flavour is Smoky Robinson and the Miracles Bacon and the Taw Hill area has the most upmarket crisp taste, 76% of crisp eating residents in that district prefer those posh ones that cost an extra 60p per packet, all for the added luxury of being sprinkled with sea salt.

Swindon Centric Says ; A half-baked crispy story, that really just isn't a story. Not 'Alf!

Dangerous Rise In Number Of Residents Talking Rubbish On Tennis

Swindon has seen a 157% rise in the number of residents talking like they know what they mean about tennis, as Wimbledon began this week.

Shaun Snooper, 34, of the Swindon Eager Listeners Association said, " we have our extensive snoopers around town, many of whom are pensioners who pretend to be deaf, but actually have keener ears than bats. So my advice, if you're going to talk about the tennis for the next two weeks, please do some reading up about the techniques of the many players at Wimbledon, so you sound like you know what you're talking about.''

Swindon Centric understands police are now giving fixed penalty notices for anyone seen standing in a queue at Greggs between the hours of noon and 2pm who talks loudly about tennis.

Swindon Centric Says ; New balls!

Man Charged For Not Having Top Button Done Up

In an effort to fill up plenty of blank pages on a slow news day, the Swindon Beaver Herald today covered a man who was fined £14.76 for being seen walking down Commercial Road during business hours on the morning of June 7th without his top shirt button done up.

Police say they are clamping down on open-shirted men in the town's buttoned down business district, at least they say that when the Swindon Beaver Herald has a very slow news day.

Swindon Centric Says ; In our new Predictive News Service we can safely break a story that will lead the headlines tomorrow, the weather, we got our crystal ball out, we really are that good newshounds!

Local Schoolkid Achieves Slightly Above Average Task On His Own

A seven year old from the Rodbourne Road area of Swindon has made local press and even national TV (it was Channel 5, we think that counts), after he was able to polish his own school shoes without adult assistance.

'' This is a tremendous achievement, Swindon we believe provides the perfect environmental factors for nurturing children to know the ins and outs of shoe polishing on their own.'' That comment from Sarah McFooe of the local children's charity, Cotton Wool Kids.

Its expected that little Jimmy, 7 years of age from Rodbourne Road, will be competing at an inter-regional level for South-West/South champion for shoe polishing at an under 11 event.

An unnamed family source is reported to have said this lunchtime, ''we believe he can do it, but he'll have to buff up his ideas first.''

Swindon Centric Says ; What next, children able to go out on their own, back to being chimney sweeps, digging coal out for us in unsafe pits? It could be cheaper than employing immigrants to do it, they could have competition.

Roundabouts Reinvented ; Town Stays Ahead Of The Curve

Think of Swindon dear reader and several things instantly spring to mind, the railway, the greenery and wide open spaces and of course, roundabouts.

In recent years however, the edge, or should that be, the curve, has been lost by our town, with a lowering in the number of roundabouts built.

'' Recent construction has seen circular road junctions give way to grids or traffic lights on intersections at right angles.'' That stimulating comment from council road traffic junction expert, Maurice Minor.

To add a new twist to Swindon's unique concentration of roundabouts, from midnight on Monday, all roundabouts will become anticlockwise only for the next ninety days within the Swindon Borough limits. If the scheme is deemed successful at giving Swindon's traffic circles back their kookiness, then the idea will become permanent.

Swindon Centric Says ; We need to get a webcam up on the Magic Roundabout before Monday, someone call the tech guy!

Swindon Breaks Records ; Pensioners Scared Of Long Grass ; Town Comes Top Of Scaredy-Cat Poll

In a shocking and frightening 'story' (by our record breaking timidness), pensioners in Swindon have said they are being held prisoner in their own home.

Not by burglars.

Not by drug dealers.

Not by gangs.

But by grass.

We'll say it again, GRASS.

Grass and not the slightly illegal fun-attached type that you smoke, oh no. The boring, lawn covering kind.

The council have lapsed cutting the grass at pensioners bungalows off Ferndale Road and it's got so long they were all left with no option at all, but to contact the Swindon Beaver Herald to express their outrage.

Swindon Centric Says ; What next, bread that's too hard or water that's too wet? If we were the Daily Mail we would end with 'we're going to hell in a handcart', but we're not, so we won't. We'll just say....GET A GRIP!

Residents Get Militant Over Meteorologists False Claims

Town residents have got angry over the lack of rain they've been promised by Swindon weather forecasters.

Several dozen marched this lunchtime to the main Swindon Meteorological Office based at Bath Road and shouted loudly that the staff inside were all liers after this weekend's forecasts.

'' On Sunday we were led to believe there would be showers and again today, I went to work with a brolly and nothing again. They can't carry on issuing these warnings then not letting them happen. This isn't like the government trying to scare us with terror threat warnings, this is weather, the rain, vital to the functioning of the country.'' That comment from Martine St Clair of Abbey Meads.

The police had to intervene and move the protesters on after militant weather forecasters began throwing weather veins and salty seaweed out of the top floor window on the people gathered in the street.

Swindon Centric Says ; They've forecast showers for the rest of the week, will the office get burned down if it stays dry?

Council Launches Big Garden Shed-Sized Recycling Box To Store All Little Recycling Boxes Inside

In a welcome, though slightly bizzare move, Swindon Borough Council has said it will distribute a large, garden shed sized recycling box to store all wheelie bins and recycling containers inside.

Many residents have expressed concern at the space to store all refuse containers when the Borough has town-wide recycling services in July.

'' We voted to provide all residents with a big box, essentially, to store all the other boxes they'll need inside.'' That comment from Chief Recycling Officer, Martin Matryoshka of Swindon Borough Council.

Rumours that to blend in, residents can specify a original 'big' black box, or a newer, orange coloured one to match their proper size containers hasn't been confirmed, though some DIY stores are researching providing garden sheds disguised as huge, walk-in recycling boxes.

The Council refused to be drawn further, but did confirm that the super-sized boxes would be weighed down to keep them blowing down the street in windy weather with bricks and rockery stones on the lids (roofs). They did hint they would be of flatpack construction.

Swindon Centric Says ; If it only costs a fiver to buy these additional big-sized storage boxes, then people could buy half a dozen and convert them to houses!

Ferret Found In Town Garden ; Becomes Media Darling Due To Lazy Reporter

Commotion and non-reasoned celebrity worship hit central Swindon this lunchtime after a ferret was found in the back garden of Swindon Beaver Herald cub-reporter Jimmy Olsen.

'' I'd been at home with some really bad back ache over the weekend and as today was a slow news day, my editor, Mr J J Jameson told me to take today off as well. It was only while I was making some toast that I looked out the kitchen window and noticed a ferret looking into my wheelie bin. I grabbed my camera and snapped a few pictures, then rang my editor. What a scoop.'' That comment from Mr Olsen, of Goddard Avenue.

Ferrets are rare in Swindon, indeed most are upper class and only frequent the top end of Okus Road at Angel Ridge, it's rare according to local experts to find one this far East at this stage of the summer.

This particular ferret is named Celia and is reported to have been separating Mr Olsen's refuse into his recycling box.

Rumours that Celia is due to appear in a feature in the Swindon Beaver Herald with a tie in to the Sunshine Swindon Breakfast Show (Swindon Channel 915 on your Freeview and Sky systems) about minimising your household waste has been denied by Celia's agent, Mimi Crocker, of Crocker's Power Agents.

Swindon Centric Says ; Celia should get a book deal and some awful reality/lifestyle series on Channel 4 or BBC 2 with a pun in the title, Mary Queen Of Shops, who cares?!
